Turkey Terror
I
usually have a lot to talk about when it comes to the choice topic option, however,
I feel as if recently so much has been going on, yet nothing at all. Therefore,
I decided to pull up my handy dandy news app (that I probably look at once a
year) and see what was going on in our local area. When opening the app, I was surprised
to see one of the most popular stories in our area right now was named “Vicious
Gangs of Turkeys Terrorizing the Resort City of Charlevoix”.
My
initial reaction was fear, given we live near the Troy Nature Center and receive
daily visits from the 30 turkeys living in the forest. However, we do supply
them with all their food, so hopefully we have created an alliance. The article
had stated that this “once quiet, peaceful and beautiful resort in the heart of
Michigan’s up north beauty, is now filled with the hardest turkeys on the
streets terrorizing citizens, according to the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources”. It has been advised that if
one of these intimidating birds comes at you to make a “loud squawking noise”,
so hopefully they will be confused enough to let you be. These turkeys have
even been spotted “assaulting a police officer” as shown in a viral TikTok.
I
was going to make a joke about being intimidated by flightless birds and
decided to fact check myself before typing it out, only to find out that they
are anything but flightless. Apparently, turkeys “can fly short distances at
40-50 miles an hour” (National Geographic). If that’s not shocking enough, they
can also “run 12 miles an hour and are actually adept (skilled) swimmers”
(National Geographic). So maybe Turkeys are a bigger threat then we originally
thought. Anyways, stay safe!
