Do We Have a Soulmate?!
In the spirit of Valentine's day approaching and the ongoing topic surrounding marriage and dating in Their Eyes Were Watch God written by Zora Neale Hurston, I started to think about the long held belief that we all have a soulmate. More specifically, what defines a soulmate and can we have multiple in one lifetime?!
Most people when you bring up the theory of a soulmate think romance, however, I like to believe that your soulmate can take the form of a friendship, and that’s where the multiple soulmate’s idea came into play. The definition of soulmate, according to refinery29, is “someone that just gets you. It's a connection of minds, a mutual respect, an unconditional love and a total understanding”. The idea of having a soulmate is having someone who’s soul locks with yours, whether that be a romantic partner or a best friend. Everyone’s so obsessed with this idea that their ONE soulmate is out there, however, I really believe that if we reflect on the relationships we’ve made through life, whether they be in the past or present, we can find that we’ve connected with multiple soulmates. Instead of having our minds set on that ONE, why don’t we acknowledge all the other forms of love that surround us, simple things we look over, like hugs from our friends, the way our pet looks up to us, the way our parents smile at us, the way you hopefully treat yourself.
I say this all as a reminder that if you don’t have a date or a “soulmate” this valentines day, remember so many other people love you, and that’s the true point of valentines day. Don’t dwell on being single, life’s too short, instead throw yourself a party (a pity party if you're still sad), hang out with your family, invite a friend over and watch a movie, surround yourself with your many soulmates.
