Names and Connotations
I find it funny that our blog topic this week is the meaning of names because just last week I was sitting with my family and we were talking about the same thing, researching the meaning of each one of our names and our cats names.
My parents were telling me that when they named me it wasn’t so much for the meaning, but because my great grandpa's name was Victor, and they had decided to base both me and my sisters names on past relatives. My middle name, Marie, although it's a pretty basic girl’s middle name, comes from my grandma on my dad's side whose name was Marie. Therefore, it wasn’t until last week that I really made the connection that the name Victoria was based on the goddess of victory in ancient Greece. Although I think that’s pretty cool, I never prided myself on the meaning, nor that there was a Queen Victoria. However, another Victoria related thing is Victoria’s Secret, and I definitely had my fair share of questions on that one, “Victoria, what’s your secret?”. Before I even knew what Victoria’s Secret was (in elementary school) I had kids asking me for my secret and I truly thought everyone knew something about me I didn't yet know and it was very concerning at a young age. It wasn’t as bad as my sister Amelia though who kept getting asked where her plane went. Other than that, I've never been bothered with my name, I actually really like my name. Sometimes I find it on keychains, sometimes I don't, even though it was the 21st most popular girls name in 2018 (in the United States).
Another cute little thing I’d like to add is that one of my cat’s names is Owen, and the meaning for Owen is “young warrior”, which fits him perfectly. He’s always lurking after squirrels and birds outside, and climbing trees, so it’s pretty cute we picked a name with the perfect meaning on accident.
Just for fun: The "young warrior" Chronicles:
